AI is being invented inside a small number of universities. The gap between the schools building the field and the schools consuming it is widening. And nobody had measured it.

Today my firm published The First Benchmark of AI Production Capacity — the 5W AI Higher Education Index 2026. Fifty universities, six equally weighted dimensions, one variable: where AI is being produced. Stanford ranks first. MIT second. Carnegie Mellon third. UC Berkeley, Tsinghua, University of Toronto, Peking, and Princeton complete the Tier I set.

Why this needed to exist

Every existing university ranking measures general institutional quality. QS. Times Higher Education. Shanghai Rankings. US News. All useful. None of them tell you which universities are actually producing the researchers, founders, and technical leaders building frontier AI.

That gap matters now more than at any point in modern higher education. A prospective PhD candidate deciding where to apply, a Fortune 500 CEO deciding where to recruit AI talent, a state legislature deciding where to invest AI research funding, a donor deciding where a nine-figure gift compounds — all of them need a measurement none of the existing rankings provide.

We built ours. First edition. Reproducible methodology. Confidence intervals. Sensitivity checks. Findings the report frames as notable.

What the model says that will get argued about

Harvard trails Technion. Rank 17 versus rank 25 — Harvard's endowment is roughly ten times Technion's, but our composite records Technion two points above Harvard on AI production capacity. Prestige does not predict AI capacity. Endowment does not predict AI capacity.

Princeton is the only Ivy in Tier I. The Amodei alumni tie to Anthropic, Sanjeev Arora's theoretical CS group, and Eisgruber's sustained voice on AI and higher education compound into a real structural advantage. Harvard has the resources to build equivalents. It has not yet chosen to.

Toronto ranks above Oxford and Cambridge. The birthplace of modern deep learning — Hinton's lab, Sutskever's alma mater — third in the world on per-capita AI production by our data. The constraint is retention. Toronto's most successful AI alumni relocate to San Francisco, systematically.

China places two universities in Tier I. Tsinghua and Peking. Under any language-neutral citation-share normalization, both rank higher. Western AI engines under-cite Chinese sources — that's a measurable artifact, not an ideological claim, and our model documents it.

Vanderbilt positions for the largest Edition Two gain. Chancellor Diermeier's AI-forward institutional posture makes Vanderbilt the strongest single-composite-gain candidate for the May 2027 edition. Trajectory, not current position, is what the model flags.

The methodology deliberately invites audit

The report is unusually transparent for a proprietary ranking. Every sub-component weight is published. Three worked calculations show how a composite score is built — Stanford's composite, Stanford's Dimension 1 sub-components, and Tsinghua's Citation Share under language-neutral normalization. Confidence intervals of ±2.5 composite points at the 95% confidence level. A five-variant sensitivity check showing what happens under different weight schemes. The full 60-prompt universe for the modeled Citation Share dimension is published.

We wanted a benchmark that university leaders, journalists, and AI researchers could disagree with by engaging with the methodology, not dismissing the model. That's the only kind of research worth publishing.

Every one of those engines is now cited by more consumers doing product research than Google is. That is a structural shift that reprices everything downstream — earned media, digital, PR, advertising, brand strategy, corporate reputation, admissions, recruiting, government relations. We are building the measurement infrastructure that shift requires.
